Read on to learn a bit about Rob, our Director of Electronic Prepress, his work at Kingston, his hobbies and more!
1. What is your favorite part of your job at Kingston?
It is cliche, of course, but really it is the people. As I made a mental list of favorite things about the job, I kept coming back to people. Take away the people and the job is just work. Add in the people and it becomes a career, a large part of my life. Working with people can be hard but also the most rewarding, more so than any of the actual work.
2. What is the coolest Kingston project you have been a part of?
Really, all of them are cool at some level. A recent job utilized soft touch coating with a spot dull varnish, produced a very unique look and feel—that was cool.
3. What is your favorite machine at Kingston?
We do some things with the bindery equipment that still surprise me and the wide format equipment is probably the coolest machinery in the plant. That said, I have to say the litho presses still amaze me. Those presses are complex from both a mechanical and chemical aspect. The whole process of how ink is put on a substrate at speeds of 15,000 sheets per hour is impressive and interesting to me even after many years in the business.
4. What are you passionate about outside of work?
In years past (many), prior to marriage and kids, I was into fast motorcycles and fast cars. Luckily, that morphed into fixing bicycles and remodeling houses. I am almost done remodeling a 1973 house, updating it to a 2021 house. So – guess I would say I’m passionate about refinishing, reclaiming, and reworking things to make them new again.
5. Any tidbits about yourself outside of work – kids? Hobbies? Fun facts?
I am married and have 3 daughters and 2 grandkids. Our oldest daughter owns Monarch Coffee, with her husband, in KCMO (www.monarchcoffeekc.com). Our two younger daughters are both almost finished with their undergrad degrees at KU.
I was in the US Navy before coming to Kansas. Moved here because I want to be close to both coasts.
