As a Kingston customer, you might not know of the different methods and machines we use to create your projects every day.

But we wanted to share some of the benefits of a machine we have in the wide format department: An HP Latex printer. In the past we have relied on eco-solvent printing, which is still very viable, but we wanted to share some of the benefits of latex printing as well.

What is latex printing?

Similar to desktop inkjet printers, latex ink printers use print heads to distribute water-based inks on paper or other media, acting as a carrier for the color pigments. Heat dries the latex as it comes off the printer, the output dries fast and can be rolled or applied immediately after printing. The finished piece is durable, long-lasting, and eco-friendly.

The major advantage of HP Latex is its versatility to print across a wide range of applications, thanks to the printers’ automatic calibration and maintenance features. A variety of projects can be created with latex printing, including (but not limited to):

Latex printing durability

While both eco-solvent and HP Latex give excellent image and color quality that’s nearly photo-realistic, durability is also a major competitive factor, especially when it comes to scratch resistance. While HP latex inks are scratch resistant, eco-solvent prints are easy to scratch and typically need to be laminated.

Safer for the environment

Eco-solvent inks can be hazardous, and need to be closely controlled – note the ‘dangerous goods’ logos on the cartridges. HP Latex inks contain many components, none of which are hazardous in the quantities used in the ink or to print. HP’s internal experts design the inks so that they are compliant with the highest regulations.
